The Shapton Waterstone Setup

Pond With Two Holders

The first item in the sharpening setup is the pond. The pond conveniently holds the water, which lubricates the sharpening process, as well as up to three sharpening stone holders. The dimensions of the pond are:

  • length:
  • 15 3/8 in.
  • width:
  • 12 5/8 in.
  • height:
  • 2 1/8 in.
  • depth:
  • 7/8 in.

The pond is heavy and non-slip. It functions as a solid base for all the sharpening functions. It holds the water splashed during the sharpening and flattening operations. It consists of two 5mm pieces of tempered glass laminated together held in a heavy rubber rim. The glass is sand-blasted to provide a non-slip surface for the stone holders.

Holder

The next item in the sharpening setup is the sharpening stone holder. Each holder consists of five layers of 5mm tempered glass laminated together and held in a rubber rim. This construction makes the holders heavy and very stabile for easy and comfortabel sharpening. The holders are stackable and they do not clamp the sharpening stones; the stones just fit comfortably in a rubber form.

Holder

The final tool in the shapton system is a flattening stone. The image shows the pond, a holder with a sharpening stone, and a Diamond on Glass Lapping Plate. This plate is flat to within five microns.
